Karen Alloy, December 26, 2011!

One week from this coming Friday, we will have finally arrived at December 21, 2012 – the day when the world as we know it will come to an end … well, sort of … or something like that. (Or if you believe NASA in the USA today : “Dec. 21, 2012, won’t be the end of the world as we know [it?], however, it will be another winter solstice.”)

The leading purported purveyor of gloom and doom here is the so-called Mayan End of the World Prophecy. And the leading account of just what this prophecy involves is the May 2009 You Tube video “2012: The End of the World,” by the lovely Karen Alloy, aka spricket24.

(As an objective sign of just how leading this account was and still is : “In 2009, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences – one of the three governing bodies that provide Emmy Awards – awarded Alloy a regional Emmy in the Advanced Media Writer category for her video ‘2012: The End of The World.’ This was the first time an award had been given in this category. Alloy accepted the award from the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at a ceremony held on January 21, 2010.”)

We first discovered the allure of Karen Alloy’s “2012: The End of the World” on this website in September 2009, when, at the end of a much more dreary prognosis on Canadian federal politics, the dapper L. Frank Bunting noted: “Meanwhile again …  Frédéric Lehoux from Montréal … has just drawn our attention to an interesting USA video called ‘Watching Karen – 2012: The End of the World’ (or something like that). And if the world does end in the United States in 2012 …  on Stephen Harper’s foreign policy principles it will have to end in Canada too …”

About four months later the counterweights editors returned to the (not so?) ironic juxtaposition of the lovely Ms Alloy and Canadian federal politics with a four-paragraph discourse on “Has the prorogation protest peaked .. could be a good question for Karen Alloy?”

Since then we seem to have lost sight of Ms Alloy on this site, which is a great shame.   Especially since this 30-something American woman, who “grew up in a military family” in North Dakota, “joined the National Guard at 17,” moved to Minneapolis in her early 20s, and now lives in Chicago, posted a You Tube video called “O Canada Day!” on July 1, 2009.

Canadian (and American) patriotism aside, at the moment I myself am particularly worked up about the question “What if  Karen Alloy’s Mayan End of the World Prophecy for December 21, 2012 is actually right?”

To start with, I take heart from Ms Alloy’s own concluding remarks that, in the very end, just what the Mayan calendar/prophecy and all other similar apocolyptiae are saying is “a complete matter of interpretation.”Â  I take further hope from the Doomsday 2012 Fact Sheet, which explains that : “The ancient Maya did not predict the end of the world or any disaster in December 2012”; and “The Maya calendar, which is made up different cycles of day counts, does not end this year. Rather, one cycle of 144,000 days (394 years) ends and the next cycle begins.”

Put another way, it seems, all that is really going to happen one week from this coming Friday, on December 21, 2012, is that a new age or era in the history of the global village will begin. And who can doubt that the world as we know it today stands in considerable need of a new age or era – a fresh start, as it were, on the story of the now almost fully conscious we the diverse human species on planet earth, etc, etc.

A new era in the USA when, as we vaguely heard on MSNBC TV last night, the concept that tax decreases (or at least no tax increases, for anyone) are the only public policy that matters has at last been discredited as the insane fantasy it has always been. A new era in Canada when, as we vaguely heard on CBC TV last night, the concept that the old colonial British monarchy actually matters, and must continue to block all other progress on Canadian ”national unity,” has at last been discredited as the insane fantasy it has always been.

A new era in the world at large, when the concept that killing other people in an effort to achieve worthwhile political goals actually makes practical sense has at last been discredited as the insane fantasy it has always been. And on and on, etc, etc, etc, etc.

The cynics will of course say “bah, humbug.” They will complain that this is just another way of trying to revive the soggy spirit of seasonal peace on earth and goodwill to all men (and women) that many of us were hoping the increasingly successful War on Christmas had done away with at last. They may be right. And I do wonder just what Karen Alloy might think about that?  But after watching these 10 further samples from her apparently now more than 200 You Tube videos, I am not dead certain I want to know:
